Our team of Optometrists have completed the latest qualification through Glasgow Calidonian University in Myopia Management, so they can confidently and competently manage your myopia.

What is Myopia?

Myopia, also known as short-sightedness, is a common eye condition, where objects in the distance appear blurry, but your near vision is clear. Poor distance vision is caused by the light no longer focusing on the back of your eye, but in front. Myopia can develop at any age, but it often starts during childhood and progressively worsens until early adulthood. In Optometry, myopia has been an area of great interest for many years and extensive research has been conducted. It is agreed within our industry that myopia can quickly and significantly progress due to the eye increasing in size and becoming longer. This can lead to an increased risk of developing other eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma and retinal detachment. Some factors that can contribute to myopia progression include genetics, prolonged near work such as reading or computer use and lack of outdoor activity.

What treatments do we offer?

Normal glasses will help children see clearly for long distance, however they don't slow the short-sightedness from progressing. We now have treatment options that are proven by research to slow the myopia from getting worse. Myopia progression can be reduced using specialist soft Misight contact lenses, Ortho-k night lenses and innovative spectacle lenses. Our team of Optometrists will discuss with you during your appointment the different treatment options for managing your myopia. We will then tailor your Myopia Management treatment plan to your eyes needs. As part of your treatment plan, we can accurately measure the size of your eyes using our Topcon Myah equipment, allowing our Optometrists to confidently review how successful the treatment is. The size of the eye is known as the axial length. Measuring the axial length is classed as the gold standard method within research to check for myopia changes. Our team of Optometrists have successfully managed lots of children’s myopia since we began offering this service in 2016.

What are our treatment options?

MIYOSMART-LOGO_Global_edited.jpg

Miyosmart lenses are a spectacle lens that slows down the progression of myopia in children. It is a unique innovative spectacle lens developed by Hoya using an award-winning D.I.M.S (Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments) technology to slow the progression of myopia on children. It is a specialist spectacle lens that is made from polycarbonate material which makes it very sate to wear. On the lens surface there is an antireflective coating applied, which helps maximise your child's vision by enhancing the amount of light that goes through the lens. Cosmetically it looks a lot nicer too as there are less reflections! Miyosmart lenses are available in clear and sunglasses (photochromic and polarised tints are available).

Specialist Spectacle Lenses

MiSight is a daily disposable soft contact lens that is licensed for myopia management. Research shows that it is effective at reducing the progression of myopia in children. Some children wear MiSight lenses 6 days a week for 10 hours per day, or your child may choose to wear them occasionally as an alternative to their Miyosmart glasses eg. for sports/ hobbies. To wear MiSight lenses your child will need a contact lens fitting appointment with one of our Optometrists. During the lens fitting we will check the health of your child's eyes, teach them how to safely insert and remove the contact lenses and ensure they are confident handling the lenses before they take them home. We will regularly review your child's eye health, prescription, axial length and fit of the lenses.

Soft Daily Contact Lenses

Ortho-k lenses are specialist gas permeable contact lenses that are worn overnight, they are proven by research to reduce myopia progression. These lenses allow your child to have clear vision throughout the day without wearing glasses or contact lenses. Ortho-k lenses are worn to bed and gently flatten the front surface of the eye (cornea) while you sleep, correcting your prescription. When the lenses are removed in the morning, your child's vision will be clear and they wont need to wear any glasses or contact lenses throughout the day. As the treatment only gives temporary flattening of the cornea, to maintain clear vision during the day, the lenses need to be worn every night. If lens wear were to stop, the effect of the lenses would wear off and your child would need to return to wearing glasses or contact lenses during the day.
